Samsung Odyssey G5 - A Great Value Gaming Monitor

is it worth your money series on gamer's clinic today i'm getting to share with you my feedback and knowledge from gaming with samsung's odyssey g5 32-inch curve monitor for a touch over in two months i'll first do a fast overview of its technical specifications then share with you my feedback and preferences about this monitor so be happy to use the timestamps to skip to any section and do not forget to hit that subscribe button if you haven't already to remain updated and let's take a pointy curve into the small print early 2020 samsung announced its odyssey lineup of monitors as its next generation of gaming monitors supporting wide quad hd resolution screens with up to 240 hertz of super fast refresh rates one millisecond of reaction time g-sync and freesync compatibility and 1000 are curvature screens with support for hdr on paper these specs were indeed very attractive and a cause for excitement but when the worth was announced for the g7 and g9 that excitement died along side those hefty price tags luckily not too long after samsung added a 27 and 32 inch odyssey g5 into the merchandise lineup which was more wallet-friendly so i made a decision to select one up to ascertain if the 1000r curvature really does deliver more gaming immersion my first impressions when taking the panel out of the box was that the panel didn't feel as overly curved as many reviews are saying but man was i wrong i'll explain why shortly within the feedback section the entire monitor is formed from very black durable plastic with nice engravings on the rear and didn't look too plain which may be a nice touch fixing was quick and straightforward without the necessity of any tools and when assembled it feels very sturdy and appears a bit like the opposite cg7 from from the front however albeit the odyssey g5 and g7 looks almost identical the odyssey g5 va panel only deserves up to 144hz of refresh rate as against 240hz on the g7 the g5 also doesn't accompany samsung's qled or quantum dot display technology so it's limited to 16.7 million colors and therefore the maximum brightness on the g5 is additionally slightly lower at 250 nits and talking about display brightness albeit the odyssey g5 supports a high dynamic range contents it only supports the hdr10 protocol without backlight dimming so it's not a feature to urge too excited about though the odyssey g5 remains very capable of delivering crystal clear and sharp images with its high static contrast ratio of 2005 to 1 and it's g-sync compatible for nvidia card owners and supports amd freesync for buttery smooth gaming on the rear there's one 3.5 millimeter audio out port one hdmi 2.0 port one version 1.2 displayport one usb service port and one power port the facility is supplied via alittle external power brick that's 2.9 inches by 2.6 inches which isn't overlarge and every one the cables are often routed via a cable management clip that's on the rear of the monitor stand which is additionally another nice feature as for the size of the monitor it measures at 20.5 inches high by 27.9 inches wide and 10.8 inches thorough and using the plastic stand that comes with the monitor the monitor will take up a complete of 301 square inches of your table land and talking about the stand the stand that comes within the box doesn't have any swivel or height adjustment it only allows for tilt

adjustments of -2 degrees to plus 18 degrees so it'd be better to use this monitor with a monitor arm moving on to the settings available from the monitor you'll easily change and adjust the contrast brightness volume and a couple of other settings via the only easy to use joystick underneath the screen there's even a on-screen crosshair option for fps gamers which may be a feature feature that i sometimes find useful pixel reaction time s options include four settings to settle on from with the advertised one millisecond response time achieved when selecting the fastest mbr option now moving on to my feedback i'll begin by saying that for 350 us dollars the samsung odyssey g5 can deliver a reasonably decent single user viewing and gaming experience it's a gorgeous screen that has all the essential features a gamer will need today at 1440p resolution with an honest 93 pixels per inch density along side a high contrast ratio it's an ideal candidate for contemporary budget gaming systems a 1660 super or 1660 ti can easily deliver 60 frames per second on the screen the colour reproduction is accurate but not as vibrant and over saturated as you'd find on ips panels and qled screens though it should be quite enough for games and general media consumption as for the 1000r curvature it initially didn't seem much of a problem on behalf of me and playing games with this massive 32 inch allowed me to look at the on-screen suvs easily without having to show my head within the least as it's just in the corner of my view but in comparison to my previous 1800r curvature 32 inch screen i personally don't really feel any additional immersion while gaming and albeit the new 1000r curvature won't seem an excessive amount of under gaming scenarios once I involves productivity tasks like creating presentations for my full-time job or doing graphic designs images do sometimes feel slightly warped towards the sides thanks to its extreme curvature which may be a few somewhat annoying so that's something to stay in mind and also maybe it's just me but i also noticed that when i talk while facing the screen there's a more pronounced reverb than when employing a 1800r screen so you'll likely need a noise cancelling mic for all those chatty multiplayer sessions and while we are on the subject of productivity tasks i would like to means that this monitor only supports 8-bit color depth with 100 srgb coverage so if you would like to figure with more color range like adobe rgb then this monitor won't be suitable for you alright enough about productivity this is often a gamer's channel so let me share more about its gaming performance therefore the high contrast ratio was ready to deliver crisp and sharp images for many modern games i've played at 1440p while sitting at around two feet about two feet from the screen but a maximum brightness of 250 nits sometimes makes it slightly difficult to ascertain in dark scenes during the day and therefore the refore the sunlight is shining directly into my room even at maximum brightness it's sometimes difficult to ascertain through the glare on the screen although when utilized in the dark room 250 nits should be quite enough for many people as even i had to show down the brightness in the dark and the other thing with the marginally lower peak brightness on the odyssey g5 is that playing games with hdr enabled doesn't really show much difference than when it's off bright areas on the screen do get a touch bit brighter but thanks to the shortage of local dimming the entire image also becomes brighter leading to not much contrast between dark and bright areas on the screen if that creates sense so being a va panel watching movies and playing games in the dark with dark scenes is a blast with the deep blacks and high contrast and albeit the viewing angles was good due to the acute curvature it might be difficult to possess quite two people watching content from the screen without the image being just slightly distorted so you'll cross split screen pit from your list the unit i got also didn't have much noticeable backlight bleeding or g-sync flickering issues but as each panel will vary i feel it's a matter of luck i assume as for pixel reaction time on the odyssey g5 it's not as fast because the odyssey g7 and g9 panels so there'll be some ghosting but as long as you look very hard for it using the fastest setting with mbr or motion blur reduction while playing call of duty i barely notice any obvious ghosting or input lag problems and playing other open world games some ghosting is usually noticeable noticeable once I experience frame rate dips but the matter are often mitigated by turning on the in-game motion blur option however if you're a significant gamer who is looking to only play competitive shooters then it might be better to take a position during a panel with faster response times so i feel overall samsung did deliver a reasonably functional and budget-friendly gaming monitor with the odyssey g5 albeit it's stripped of the many features that's on the flagship g7 model my only two gripes with it's that the marginally low peak brightness which made it difficult to game during the day without my shades down because half my room is roofed with windows and therefore the spouse is restricted is that this limited tilt adjustment which needs the acquisition of a separate monitor arm so i can get the perfect viewing angles which might mean additional costs but aside from that this 2k 144hz v8 panel can still deliver all the essential gaming features better than cheaper monitors at 350 especially if you're going for a budget gaming build and basic productivity tasks it isn't the simplest but still an excellent monitor that gives great value for your money even better once you can get one on sale.
